Lundy Elementary, the only K-5 school serving Mount Charleston’s 500 residents, has been closed since August 2023 after Tropical Storm Hilary brought devastating rainfall and flooding to the region.

After over a year of closure due to severe storm damage, Lundy Elementary School in Mount Charleston is set to undergo $7.8 million in repairs, bringing hope for the school’s reopening by fall 2025. The Clark County School Board recently approved the funding, reversing its earlier decision not to repair the facility.

Storm Damage and Community Impact

Lundy Elementary, the only K-5 school serving Mount Charleston’s 500 residents, has been closed since August 2023 after Tropical Storm Hilary brought devastating rainfall and flooding to the region. The storm dropped over 9 inches of rain on Lee Canyon and 8 inches on Mount Charleston, causing widespread destruction. Floodwaters damaged Kyle Canyon Road, the primary route in and out of the area, further isolating the community.

Without a local school, students were left with limited options, including commuting 40 miles to Indian Springs Elementary or switching to home-schooling.

Community Push Leads to Reversal

Initially, the Clark County School Board voted against repairing the school in August 2024, citing costs and logistical concerns. However, strong community opposition led to a reconsideration, and in December 2024, trustees approved the repairs in a 5-1 vote, with only Trustee Brenda Zamora opposing the decision.

Planned Repairs and Improvements

The Clark County School District (CCSD) has contracted Martin-Harris Construction LLC to complete the necessary work, which includes:

  • Replacing water-damaged floors and repairing cracked surfaces
  • Repainting the school’s exterior
  • Upgrading the electrical system with new generators, conductors, and wiring
  • Implementing erosion control measures to prevent future storm damage
  • Other structural reinforcements to enhance the building’s longevity

Projected Reopening Timeline

CCSD has set an ambitious goal to reopen Lundy Elementary by fall 2025. The repairs will not only restore the school but also help strengthen Mount Charleston’s resilience against future extreme weather events.

A Win for Local Families

For Mount Charleston residents, the school’s reopening means more than just a return to normalcy—it ensures that children can continue their education close to home, avoiding long commutes and disruptions to their learning.

Stay tuned for updates as construction progresses.
