Warner Bros. and Sony Unite to Build $400M Film Studio in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is set to become a major hub for film and television production with a groundbreaking partnership between Warner Bros. Discovery and Sony Pictures. After previously backing competing projects, both studios have united behind a $400 million studio development in Summerlin, signaling a significant investment in Nevada’s entertainment industry.
A Shift in Strategy: From Competition to Collaboration
Initially, Warner Bros. and Sony pursued separate studio projects, each requiring state tax incentives for funding. Warner Bros. had backed a facility at the UNLV Harry Reid Research and Technology Park, while Sony collaborated with Howard Hughes Holdings on a smaller studio in Summerlin.
However, in a strategic shift, Warner Bros. has abandoned its UNLV project and joined forces with Sony on the Summerlin studio, which will include 10 soundstages, commercial developments, hotels, and retail spaces.
Impact on the Las Vegas Economy
Assemblywoman Sandra Jauregui, a key sponsor of the Summerlin project, highlighted the move as a major win for Las Vegas: “We are the entertainment capital of the world, and this partnership between two major film and television studios only reinforces that.”
The Summerlin studio project is contingent on securing at least $80 million per year in Nevada tax credits, which still require approval from the state legislature and Governor Joe Lombardo. A previous $190 million bill supporting both projects was rejected in 2023, making it clear that the state would likely fund only one development.
Challenges in Securing State Incentives
Despite the enthusiasm, securing financial backing remains uncertain. Governor Lombardo has expressed skepticism about large-scale subsidies for the film industry, citing concerns about the cost to Nevada taxpayers. Some lawmakers remain cautious, particularly after the state committed $1.1 billion in subsidies to lure the Oakland A’s and the Raiders to Las Vegas.
